On Trend: House Plants

17 Oct On Trend: House Plants

Here at DBM we all have a bit of an addiction to houseplants. Lately we are seeing more and more interest in adding living greenery to interior spaces. We believe a touch of greenery can be what completes a space. Just one well placed plant can take an interior design from lovely-to-look-at to enjoyable-to-live-in.

We have also watched our clients gain confidence in plant care as we coach them through owning and loving some of their first house plants. We’ve collected some of our favorite house plants with some tips and tricks for keeping them alive and well! We encourage our clients not to be afraid of houseplants as they are often more resilient than you think and just require a bit of TLC!

Some of our favorite low light plants are Snake Plants, ZZ Plants and Pothos . And.. Bonus! these are all SO easy to care for. We recently completed an office interior design that originally lacked personality and life- despite how dark the space was, we were able to bring in some life with just a few ZZ and Pothos plants!

Medium light plants are also often easier to care for than people expect. Included in this category of plants are the Rubber Tree, Pilea and Monserta– each of which is categorized by sturdy green leaves. Misha has her eye on a tall Rubber Tree plant to pull together the design of the #SunsetToSunset family room. These plants are often a good choice for mid-century homes as they compliment the style of the home and thrive in the large windows that are a staple in mid-century architecture. Not only is the rubber plant a beautiful addition to most interior spaces- they are great for cleaning the air! We have also been seeing Pilea, or Chinese money plants, all over lately! Misha and design assistant Jada recently each added a Pilea to their own plant collections thanks to Propagate- the beautiful new plant shop in Midtown Sacramento.

Houseplants that require bright direct light are currently some of the most trendy plants used by interior designers. Fiddle Leaf Fig, Hoya, and all kinds of succulets are all bright light plants. Despite seeing them everywhere recently, we still love the look of a well trained Fiddle Leaf Fig. We sourced a large Fiddle leaf from Green Acres recently that found its perfect home in the sunroom of the #GnomeHometoGuestHome remodel.

If there is any advice we would give to a new plant owner it would be not to be afraid! Have confidence in yourself and your plant. A well placed plant can make a space. Give your plant the light and water it needs and go from there. Most nurseries are also generally more than willing to help with any plant problems you might have, so don’t be afraid to ask!
