Modern Home Design

Exciting news! Design by Misha (DBM) is currently in the throes of a modern new build and home design that has us doing imaginary cartwheels! It’s all things DBM in every modern way: current, innovative, and timeless statements. This project is in the more provincial parts of Davis, situated in Northern California. The vibe of the project will be a nod to mid-century, but mostly beckoning a Scandinavian and modern ranch aesthetic. We’re recycling beautifully salvaged wood, from the dilapidated barn that was torn down and creating wood beams. The rough-aged wood will contrast the clean and modern finish of the custom cabinetry, in addition to a matte black metal finish that will compliment as hardware along with fixtures in the kitchen. The floorplan is essentially one expansive great room, with open, high ceilings and a large airy kitchen. The current space plan comprises two very large kitchen islands; finish details in the kitchen will have a clean and modern look, contrasting the rough-aged wood, and an old world tile element with flat-front cabinets.

The new master suite addition will have a hallway featuring the reclaimed beams down the corridor, leading our clients to the entrance. Evoking a modern, relaxed aesthetic, the Master bathroom will feature natural encaustic tiles and beautiful custom cement work.

DBM is over-the-moon to design from scratch, a bathroom that dreams are made of! The possibility of a small sauna alongside a spacious walk-in shower is in the works and our clients can’t wait to sit and soak. The Master suite will have its own patio with views of the backyard landscape while maintaining privacy under a canopy of three majestic oak trees. The oak trees set the tone of this Mediterranean oasis with the back patio and dining spaces overlook a creek, a large modern pool, and a soon-to-be pool house. The pool-house will also feature a metal standing seam roof situated conveniently close to the modern pool. The footprint to the custom pool to say the least is grand! In a large rectangular shape, the modern pool design is fashioned in an understated wood-tile finish that gives space to the terrain encompassing this three-acre parcel. We envision the surrounding landscape to have an organic form to the contrasting harsh angular shapes of the modern structure. We plan to have the perennial planting varieties consist of Russian sage, lavender, verbena bonariensis, dusty miller, herbs, and a variation of colored natural grasses.

The exterior of the house will have the symmetry of a modern ranch home design that invites a clean and dry Mediterranean landscape. The zone of this project is in a Mediterranean climate where there are mature olive trees lining a dirt road entrance which quietly evoke provincial living. The exterior will either be a beautiful architectural matte white color or a very dark and porous black pigment. We envision the simplicity of a standing seam metal roof that will elevate the minimal exterior. A contrast of wood tones throughout the home’s exterior will add a natural element and warmth to the finishes and textures. The natural wood will be used as fencing, arbor details, and possibly pillars or beams. The recovered timbers will be a beautiful contrast to the modern metal edged pathways leading your footsteps on dry decomposed granite.

This modern home design is what California dreams are made of. The furniture that we sparingly decide to use will appropriately scale to the size of the expansive living quarters of the house with natural textures and tones. Some custom carpentry will involve a beautiful console table that goes the width of an oversized clean-lined sofa. The interior flooring of the space will be a natural wide planked wood or a complimentary toned cement finish. A well designed modern home which captures a timeless design is what we are eager to accomplish.  We will be maximizing the potential of this current tear down and can’t wait to transform dreams to reality soon!
